The role of the National Commission for UNESCO

The National Commission for UNESCO has five specific roles:

  • A liaison role between the government, governmental and non-governmental institutions and individuals with UNESCO, the organization’s subregional, regional and interregional centers and offices, as well as with the National Commissions of other countries and the United Nations system.
  • A consultative role, providing advisory services in UNESCO’s fields of work to the government, relevant institutions and organizations on how to participate in UNESCO’s activities and programs.
  • A dissemination role, introducing UNESCO’s goals, strategies, programs and publications at the national level through national and local media, collecting national statistics and data in line with UNESCO’s fields of activity for dissemination worldwide, and translating and publishing UNESCO books and documents in Persian.
  • A coordinating role, making the necessary arrangements for the implementation of UNESCO’s programs in the country and facilitating the participation of governmental, non-governmental authorities and institutions, and individuals in UNESCO meetings and conferences.
  • The role of designing, implementing, and evaluating UNESCO programs in the country, introducing UNESCO priorities to the government, attracting the participation of the country’s scientific and civil institutions and communities in the process of designing and implementing UNESCO programs, especially in the field of developing and approving international legal instruments, as well as participating in research related to UNESCO’s work issues in the country.
