As part of the second episode in the “Journey Through Great Minds” series, the UNESCO Basic Sciences and Technology Club held an interview with Professor Hossein Akhani—botanist, ecologist, and environmental activist—on September 21, 2025. The conversation explored his scientific journey, international experiences, and personal memories.
Professor Akhani emphasized that applying science goes beyond creating new products; it involves generating knowledge and tools that others can benefit from. He has long been active in science outreach, presenting ecological and scientific concepts in simple language for students, researchers, and the general public. Through his personal social media platforms, he shares insights on environmental awareness and plant taxonomy, helping raise public consciousness about nature and its preservation.
The interview also featured touching stories from his life—from his early fascination with plants in high school, where he created a wall newspaper using dried specimens, to his scientific travels to the Botanical Congress in Berlin and meetings with world-renowned botanists.
Emphasizing the importance of serving society and protecting the environment, Professor Akhani stated: “I have always been concerned about Iran,” and affirmed that science must serve both humanity and the planet. His reflections highlighted how science can contribute to sustainable development and public education, inspiring a new generation of researchers and environmental advocates.
This interview will be available to the public as part of a special video program on the UNESCO Basic Sciences and Technology Club’s website and social media platforms.
